Description

A readily available Australian hardwood, Blackbutt grows along the coastal regions of New South Wales and Queensland. After fire, the butt of the tree often appears very dark, hence the name ‘Blackbutt’. Due to an exceptionally fast growth rate, it is an excellent plantation timber – therefore making it an eco-friendly choice.

Commonly used in decking, fencing, landscaping, framework, retaining walls and plywood manufacturing, it is also suitable for use within the home. Blackbutt is generally quite light in colour, ranging from a honey tone through to pale brown. At times, it can also feature a slightly pinkish tinge. With warm colour combinations and a medium, even-textured straight grain, it is ideal for use in timber flooring. This timber variety also stains and polishes exceptionally well.

Blackbutt is a hardwood timber that meets the requirements in terms of fire resistance, meaning additional fire retardant treatment isn’t needed. With a Janka rating of 9.1 and a Class 1 durability rating, it is very strong and resistant to decay and insect infestation – the primary reason why it is so popular for use outdoors. When you install a Blackbutt deck, you can expect to enjoy it for more than 40 years, providing you maintain it correctly.
