The grey ironbark is a mid-sized tree that is found along the coastal regions of New South Wales and the southern parts of Queensland. The red ironbark is most commonly found in Victoria, as well as western New South Wales and Southern Queensland.
Ironbark is known for its striking colouring, which varies depending on the region. The colour ranges from light grey and light brown through to deeper reds and browns, while the texture is moderately coarse, yet even. With an interlocking grain, it is very strong – in fact, it has a Class 1 rating in terms of strength and durability.
With a Janka rating of 14.0, it is one of the toughest hardwood timbers available. You can expect Ironbark to last for more than 40 years, and this variety if hardwood meets fire resistance requirements – meaning it doesn’t need to be treated with any additional fire retardants.
