Description

Both strength and aesthetic appeal are important aspects of any outdoor decking material. Grown in the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and other parts of South East Asia, merbau is a dense type of hardwood timber. It is probably one of the most popular choices when it comes to decking, and is very easy to obtain here in Australia.

Why to choose merbau for your decking

Merbau is highly versatile, and is commonly used for both indoor and outdoor applications across Melbourne homes. It can be used for fencing, pool decking, outdoor furniture, and also within landscape design and construction. It is a timber that is not only competitively priced but is also quite easy to maintain.

Stunning colour and unique grain

The grain is generally wavy or interlocked, and the texture is coarse yet even – although these features can vary. A stunning deep reddish brown in colour, it looks great when stained or polished, making ideal for use in both modern and traditionally-styled homes. This type of hardwood is extremely resistant to both splintering and shrinking.

Strength and durability

With a Class 2 durability rating, this timber is more than just aesthetically pleasing – it is very strong and resistant to both insect infestation and decay. Indoors or out, you can expect it to last for many years (more than 40 years if well maintained). It also comes with a Janka rating of 8.6 in relation to hardness, meaning it is mark and dent resistant. Merbau creates a surface that is also quite easy to care for and maintain, all of which makes it an excellent choice for an outdoor decking application.
