Jarrah – from $58 square metre
Description
Grown in the south west of Australia near Perth, Jarrah is a very popular hardwood flooring option. It is renowned for its rich colour, as well as its strength and durability. With a Janka rating (scientific hardness scale for timber) of 8.5, as well as some natural fire resistance, it lasts for decades upon decades. Jarrah also has a certain level of natural resistance to decay and insect attack, so it is often used for outdoor projects such as fencing and decking, as well as indoor projects such as furniture and joinery.
The rich, warm colour scale of Jarrah is often said to reflect the wider WA landscape. From deep reds and well-rounded dark browns to rich burgundy shades, Jarrah lends warmth and comfort to any space it’s used in. The texture is relatively course, with a straight grain, which lends itself well to heritage-style timber flooring. It is very easy to work with, and looks stunning once stained and polished.
